NEWS FROM 2011
The Minister’s Cook-Off took place on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Clemson. The Mattie May Allen Circle helped Kurt and Lillie win second place in the Comfort Food category. This year’s entry was “Parting of the Red Sea Soup”. Mount Zion has won first place in the Comfort Food Award in 2007, 2008 and 2010. All proceeds from this wonderful event went to Safe Harbor II.
The first Harvest Tasting Luncheon sponsored by the United Methodist Women was held on Saturday, November 5, 2011. This event was a great time to gather for fellowship and food. Those attending “tasted” some wonderful recipes and received a booklet containing all the recipes. Some of us where lucky enough to win one of the door prizes (yellow mums). A total of $733 was raised for The World Thank Offering, a mission of the United Methodist Women. Special thanks to Sharon Chandler and Chery Amidon for all their hard work on this very successful event.
The United Methodist Women's Unit at Mount Zion was one of the Units recognized at the annual meeting of the Anderson District United Methodist Women on October 8, 2011. Mt Zion received recognition as a Five Star Unit with Gold Seal and Myra Armistead received recognition for completion of Plan I of the United Methodist Women Reading Program. For more information on Mount Zion's United Methodist Women Unit contact the church.
Church Library A recent addition to the church library is a novel entitled Traveler’s Rest written by Sue Carter Stout. At the March 2011 United Methodist Women joint meeting, Ms. Stout spoke to our circles about Kairos Outside. We thank Dot Wilbanks for donating Ms. Stout’s first novel to our church library. Please remember to sign out for books and magazines borrowed from the library. Look for the circulation sheets attached to clipboards.
Singleton Field at Daniel High School Mount Zion is very proud that the new stadium at D. W. Daniel High School here in Central, SC has been named Singleton Field in honor of Coach Dick Singleton. It’s not every day that a football stadium is named for one of our church members!
At Mt Zion, Dick currently serves as one of the Sunday School teachers for the Adult Sunday School class. He is also an active member of the Methodist Men's Club, often providing his home-made biscuits at their breakfast meetings. Dick was honored on the field prior to the first game played in the new stadium. To top that off, Corbin Singleton scored the first touchdown in the stadium named for his grandfather! We know that both Dick and Corbin as well as all the fans were bursting with pride on Friday night, August 26, 2011. Congratulations to the entire Singleton family on this momentous occasion.

Mount Zion's Adopt-A-Highway
A BIG thanks to David Rice who, at present, is single-handedly keeping up with Mount Zion’s Adopt-A-Highway section of Highway 93.
Special Mission Recognition
Congratulations to Myra Armistead who received Mount Zion’s United Methodist Women’s Special Mission Recognition for this year. A donation, in her honor, for mission work was sent to the Women’s Division, General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Myra was presented a certificate of recognition and a small, gold lapel pin with a cross. Thank you Myra for all you do for Mount Zion.
Bake Sale Raises Money
Thanks to all who helped cook, bake or eat for the soup and cornbread lunch/bake sale on April 10th. A total of $452.72 was raised for the Salkehatchie Summer Service Camp plans of Mount Zion’s youth and their leaders Ed and Karen Martin. Special thanks to Sharon Chandler for overseeing that event.
Spaghetti Dinner for Clemson Wesley
More thanks go to all who helped cook, serve and/or pay for the evening meal for approximately 100 college students on Sunday night, May 1st, at Clemson United Methodist Church. Mount Zion, under the direction of Elizabeth Bowman, provided the spaghetti dinner. Clemson Wesley is one of eight campus ministries in South Carolina. Their small building is located across from the campus on Hwy. 93 in downtown Clemson. Clemson United Methodist Church is the location for their Sunday night, student-led worship service which starts at 7:00 p.m. (supper at 6:30 p.m.).
Kairos Outside
A number of Mount Zion ladies attended the presentation by Sue Carter Stout on Saturday, March 5, at 10:00 a.m. Her topic was Kairos Outside. She explained the ministry and ways to participate in the weekend event. The next Kairos Outside begins the evening of April 1st at the Wesleyan Camp at Table Rock. If you were unable to attend the meeting Saturday and would like to sign up to be a Day Angel, pray or just want more information, contact Sharon Miller through the church office. Thanks to everyone who brought or sent the many agape items for the ministry, contributed “green” agape and/or honored us with your presence.
Pickens County Meals on Wheels
Pickens County Meals on Wheels has always relied on donations to support its services. In 2010, the organization provided some 50,000 meals to elderly and disabled county residents. In 2011, cuts in United Way funding will require even greater reliance on donations from the community. Just $20 will feed a meal recipient for one week. Truly, every dollar makes a difference. If you can help with a tax-deductible donation, please mail it to the Pickens County Meals on Wheels, PO Box 184, Easley, SC 29641.
Learn more about Pickens County Meals on Wheels by calling 855-3770. Please note: the county agency does not administer Clemson’s Meals on Wheels program.
