Clemson Community Care News By Vicki Miesbauer
CCC distributed Holiday Food during the holiday season beginning on November 14, 2011. Each family received bags of holiday food along with a turkey. Our community has done an excellent job in providing turkeys for these needy families.
Due to Federal Budget Cutbacks, Clemson Community Care has extra monetary needs this year. Consider a financial donation in honor of someone as a special gift this Christmas season. In addition you may provide heating assistance through your Duke Power Bill Share the Warmth program. Clemson Community Care is able to provide heating assistance thanks to this program. I appreciate all the support our members provide to help the needy in our community. CCC is participating in BiLo’s Booster Plus program.
Crop Walk 2011 By Vicki Miesbauer
Starting the first Sunday in September, several area churches, including Mount Zion began raising money for Clemson's annual CROP Walk, which took place on Sunday, October 2, 2011. The CROP Walk motto is We walk because they walk. Walkers walk in solidarity with people around the globe who must walk miles every day just to obtain water, food and health care.
Don't really know what a CROP Walk is about? It raises money for Church World Service, a cooperative ministry of 36 Christian denomina-tions and communion, working to eradicate hunger and poverty, providing sus-tainable development, disaster relief and refugee assistance around the world. In 2010, CWS provided emergency assistance after Haiti's earthquake and Pakistan's devastating flood. So far in 2011, CWS has helped survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and is currently providing famine relief in East Africa. CWS and its partners also work in impoverished communities world-wide to improve living conditions. Some examples of this type of help include digging wells, teaching sustainable agricultural methods, educating midwives and mothers about infant health and nutrition, working with AIDS orphans who have become heads of households, and providing food, water and health care to people in refugee camps.
Epworth is Our Ministry! By Elizabeth Finley, Mount Zion Epworth Representative
For 115 years, Epworth has provided CARE to thousands of children from all across South Carolina because of the loving support of United Methodists like us. The ministry of Epworth is our ministry and on Sunday, September 11, 2011 we were given an opportunity to continue this tradition by financially supporting this necessary ministry through the Annual Epworth Work Day Offering. Our last donation was on Mother’s Day 2011, which was the Sunday after Easter. It was one of our lowest attendance days and our Epworth offering suffered. Please continue to donate to Epworth as we close this financial year. For more information visit the Epworth Childrens Home.
Food Pantry
Mount Zion continues to maintain a small food pantry of non-perishable items. Canned meat and fruit are currently needed. You may leave itmes on the counter in the kitchen or on the box in the sanctuary. Please make sure the expiration dates on all items are for no longer than six months.
Habitat Restore
Help fund Habitat for Humanity in Pickens County by donating items for their ReStore. The proceeds from sales of the items will be used to build houses for needy families in Pickens County.
Pickens County Habitat for Humanity is planning to open a Habitat ReStore in March. The store is located at 807 Liberty Drive in Easley; it’s the old J&L Food Store on SC 93 about ½ mile west of the skating rink. They are now accepting donations of items for sale.
They accept new or gently used items including appliances, furniture, jewelry, dishes, games, tools, building materials; most anything that can be sold at the store. Items can be dropped off at the store on Tuesdays 3-5 pm and on Saturdays 1-5 pm, or call 864-859-5999 to schedule pick-up of your donations. All donations are tax deductible.
They also need volunteers to accept donations and to work in the store for 2-4 hour shifts, once or twice a month. Current openings are for Tuesday, 3-5 pm, and Saturday, 1-5 pm. If you don’t want to pound nails to build houses, here is another way to make it happen!
Call 864-859-5999 to schedule your time and sign up. We need YOU!

Pickens County Meals on Wheels Submitted by Myra Armistead
Pickens County Meals on Wheels has always relied on donations to support its services. In 2010, the organization provided some 50,000 meals to elderly and disabled county residents. In 2011, cuts in United Way funding will require even greater reliance on donations from the community. Just $20 will feed a meal recipient for one week. Truly, every dollar makes a difference. If you can help with a tax-deductible donation, please mail it to the Pickens County Meals on Wheels, PO Box 184, Easley, SC 29641.
Volunteer drivers are essential to the program. At present, all regular driver slots are filled in the Central-Norris-Six Mile area; but that situation could change suddenly with one resignation. Substitute driving is a possible volunteer opportunity at this time. Learn more about Pickens County Meals on Wheels by calling 855-3770. Please note: the county agency does not administer Clemson’s Meals on Wheels program.
